How to Prevent Those Trips to the Dentist

The Naturopathic Doctors at the Semiahmoo Wellness Center are pleased to bring this important piece of information to you regarding your teeth. We are always being told that we need make sure we brush and floss our teeth but what else can we do to save those trips to the dentist to get your teeth drilled and filled. Dr. Mercola recently published an article on “Minimal Dentistry” which highlighted many tips and information on how to minimally take care of your teeth and have the work that was done on your teeth last longer. One of the dentists he interviewed touched on how you get cavities and how to prevent them. Most tooth decay develops from the interaction of bacteria and acidity coming together which creates a bacterial bioflora in your mouth. If you are continually lowering your Ph in your mouth then you will start losing calcium which is necessary for strong healthy teeth. The lack of calcium will lead to porosity of the teeth and plaquing will start creating the holes in the tooth. Dr. Rainey the dentist interviewed, recommended brushing with plain baking soda at night to counter the acidity build up. Then to brush your teeth in the mornings, using toothpaste containing calcium and phosphate salts, or even hydroxyapatite, which can help remineralize your teeth. You can brush, floss, rinse, or waterpik with baking soda. see the full article here:http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/02/03/minimally-invasive-dentistry.aspx

Do You Have a Grain Brain?

I just picked up  another book on the effects of gluten and grains on your brain health. If you have read the book ” Wheat Belly” by Dr. William Davis you will enjoy Dr. Perlmutter’s book ” Grain Brain”. He demonstrates that your brain health is not in your genes but in the food you eat. He suggests that the cornerstone of all degenerative conditions including  brain disorders, is inflammation, which can be triggered by carbs, especially those containing gluten and/or high sugar. He suggests a healthy brain diet consists of one that contains low carbohydrates (healthy low glycemic) and is high in “good fats”  He also covers how statin drugs may be erasing your memory and decreasing your energy. It may even be responsible for keeping your sex life under the shelf. Statins lower cholesterol and cholesterol is important for making testosterone. Low testosterone ( in both men and women)  effects your libido and ability to perform. Plenty of studies have confirmed this connection. Decreased libido is one of the most common complaints among statin users, and lab reports have repeatedly demonstrated low testosterone in statin consumers. The Semiahmoo Wellness Center in White Rock offers testing for Gluten Sensitivity and testosterone levels. See Dr. Perlmutter at: www.drperlmutter.com.

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR COLDS AND FLU.

It is that time of the year where we start thinking about what can I do to help prevent myself from getting ill or my throat is getting scratchy or my nose is starting to run. What can I do to bring myself back to my optimal state of health the fastest.

The reasons many of us get winter colds and flu are numerous. One, we’re indoors with other people while windows and doors are closed. Two, viruses causing most respiratory infections are always mutating, and our immune systems have trouble handling these ever-changing germs. Three, viruses can survive on non-porous surfaces for hours. If you turn a door handle recently touched by a sneezing, sniffling person, then lift a hand to your nose, you’ve infected yourself. Four, some respiratory viruses, notably influenza, become airborne when someone coughs. You only need to inhale three tiny viruses to become sick.
To prevent getting sick you want to make sure your immune system is strong. You can start out by getting enough sleep and rest. Suppliments to boost your immune system are numerous but here are a few. Vitamin D3 would be the first nutrient to mention. As we discover more about this vitamin it has been shown to greatly enhance your immune system. The recommended dosage for adults is now up to 6000IU per day. Let’s not forget trusted Vitamin C. There are over 1200 scientific references in Dr. Levy’s book, “ Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins” showing the amazing effects of high dose Vitamin C in resolving may of the infections we see in ourselves and our children. 500 mg every hour when you feel an infection coming on will help. At the first hint of a cold, suck on a zinc gluconate lozenge every few hours. Don’t take zinc gluconate longer than a week, though, because excessive zinc can actually weaken immunity.
Take one 250 mg capsule of astragalus , twice daily, until you’re better. This ancient Chinese herb stimulates the immune system and seems to be highly effective at fighting colds and flu. To prevent a relapse, take one capsule twice a day for an additional week after your symptoms are gone. • For a serious congestion-busting blast, buy fresh horseradish or ginger root, grate it and eat a small amount.  If you are unsure about what to do, come in and see the Naturopathic Physicians at the Semiahmoo Wellness Center for their expert assessment and advise.

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR EARACHES

September is when kids are back to school and a time when colds and flu’s start to manifest. One of the related dreaded symptoms are ear aches, every parent’s nightmare. Instead of turning to antibiotics there are several natural remedies to consider that work very effectively in helping to relieve your child of the pain, swelling, inflammation and infection.

The first remedy to consider is garlic and olive oil drops. To make garlic and olive oil ear drops, just crush 3 – 4 cloves of garlic and cover it with EVOO in a small sauce pan. Simmer on very low heat for at least 30min, strain and decant into a dropper bottle. If you have some mullein flowers in the house, adding 1/4 cup to the mix will make the ear drops even more effective. Instead of garlic you could just combine tea tree oil and olive oil in equal drops and use a dropper to infuse in the ear.
Next to consider are homeopathic remedies which are safe and very effective in acute cases of ear infections. Here are ones to consider.

.
Aconitum – consider this at the ONSET of an earache. The external ear is usually painful and hot and a fever generally accompanies this ear infection. The child feels throbbing pain after exposure to cold and is hypersensitive to noise or music. They tend to also be very thirsty.
.
Belladonna – think RED – reddened ear, ear canal/eardrum and sometimes flushed face. The symptoms come on suddenly and usually the right ear is more affected than the left. The pain is throbbing, piercing and can extend to the throat. The child feels better sitting semi-erect and is soothed by warm applications, however, motion aggravates them and they are typically worse at night. Emotionally, the child is agitated and may become delirious and will bite and scream.
.
Chamomilla – children are in great pain which leads to extreme irritability. They tend to demand things only to refuse them once those things are offered. They are impatient and inconsolable. The ears feel stuffed up and there may be buzzing in them.
.
Mercurius – most common remedy for children with chronic ear infections. There is pus and gluey, burning and offensive-smelling discharge that is green or yellow. The pain and discharge may be worse at night and from the warmth of the bed. They may drool a great deal and sweat so much that their sheets get wet.
.
Pulsatilla – earache starts after the child has gotten wet or been chilled. Ear pains are worse at night and when the child is warm in bed – relief is felt from cold applications. There is usually little pain during the day. These children are gentle, mild and weepy and although their pain will make them somewhat irritable, it is more whining than anger.

If symptoms persist contact your Naturopathic Physician or Healthcare provider.

COLD LASER THERAPY HAS HELPED MANY CANADIANS!!

September is National Arthritis Month. Conventional therapies focus on pharmaceuticals which mask the symptoms and very often have adverse side effects. These side effects have led arthritic sufferers to seek out natural safer alternatives.

Do you suffer from chronic pain throughout your day? Do you have to take medication everyday just to function? Cold Laser Therapy has helped many Canadians -from ordinary people to elite athletes – get rid of pain and get back to the activities they enjoy most: playing their sport, a round of golf, gardening, or playing with the grandkids.

The most common form of arthritis is degenerative osteoarthritis, affecting approximately 80% of the population by the age of 65. A clinical study of 98 patients presenting with osteoarthritis of the knee at the Meditech Laser Rehabilitation Centre in Toronto, Ontario showed a significant improvement rate in excess of 92%.

Cold Laser Therapy uses light energy which penetrates the tissue and converts it to bio-chemical energy. It’s effect is at the mitochondrial level of the cell giving the cell energy thereby increasing the healing effect for regeneration and repair.

The bioflex laser that we use at the Semiahmoo Wellness Center in South Surrey/White Rock is a non invasive, non-toxic therapy that works great for both acute and chronic conditions. We have experienced great success with osteoarthritis of the hip, knees, and spine.

Jump Start Your Brain

The nervous system and brain are getting a lot of attention recently especially since the baby boomer population is aging. I am going to blog a few articles over the next month on how to jump start your Brain, improve your I. Q., and improve memory and focus. This will be helpful for everyone especially the aging population and students.

Water is very critical, drinking 17 oz.of water can increase your metabolism by 30% and this includes improving brain function. Never skip meals – attention span shortens and performance decreases. Carry a bag of nuts or low carb protein bar for situations when you feel you don’t have time for breakfast or lunch. Do not use energy bars as they are overloaded with sugar. Do not eat sugar before long study periods or taking exams. Thirty to forty minutes after eating a dose of sugar or starch the body creates a low blood sugar level which will reduce energy and brain function. As Dr. Barry Sears stated, “Food is the most powerful drug in the world. The door swings both ways.Food can be the magic elixir to anti-aging or it can be what causes your worst nightmare with your health”. Chose wisely.

Allergies and GMO Foods.

I have been testing and treating allergies and food intolerances for many years now. I am seeing an interesting pattern emerging in our office. That is the emergence of sensitivities to GMO grains, yet not testing positive for organic grains. Patients will come in and test negative for a grain like wheat (organic) and will come in the next appointment and say they are still reactive to that grain. We will then test them for the GMO related grain and they will test positive to it. Research is now emerging that rats fed GMO grains end up growing tumors. This is independant research that has not been supported by the GMO giants like Monsanto. Eight countries in Europe have now banned GMO food and yet North America has been so resistant or the pro GMO lobbyists have done a great job of gaining government support. It is time for us to stand up and be visable by buying organic and refusing to ingest GMO food products. We also owe it to our families.

How much does Stress effect your Weight ?

There is a lot of frustration out there with both men and women who exercise regularly and feel they are eating healthily and still can’t lose weight.    It has long been stated that if you expend more calories while exercising than the calories you are intaking through your diet you should naturally lose weight. Unfortunately we are now understanding that other factors come into play regarding fat and weight loss.  One major factor that tends to be overlooked is the effect that stress plays in impeding your bodies ability to burn fat. The adrenal glands are stress glands that sit on top of your kidneys and secrete hormones to help in adaptation to stressors that you encounter. Our ancestors didn’t experience the long amounts of stress that we are exposed to present day. One of the adrenals hormone called cortisol, is secreted in response to “fight or flight” situations which boded well for our ancestors to fight the wild animal they encountered or to flee from the enemy. Present day I find  most individuals and families rarely take time out and are on a round the clock schedule leading to cortisol regularly being secreted and flooding your blood stream which leads to an increase in glucose in the blood. When we see high glucose in the blood there is an increased need for the “storage ” hormone , insulin, to be secreted to store glucose in your cells for energy. As long as cortisol is secreted throughout your day then insulin is always trying to store glucose that is mobilized by cortisol secretion. If the body is always in storage mode with insulin, the body finds it very difficult to burn fat. We are now monitoring all our patients that are wanting to slim down, lose weight, or can’t seem to drop weight or fat for cortisol imbalances.
