Are you Vitamin D Deficient?

More and more research is coming in showing the many benefits of Vitamin D with everything from helping to prevent the cold and flu to decreasing your risk to developing cancer. The ideal way to get your Vitamin D is by exposing your skin to the appropriate amount of sunshine. Unfortunately, our climate and our daily work environments don’t allow us to expose ourselves to the sunshine long enough for our bodies to manufacture the amount of Vitamin D we need.Sun exsposure (without sunscreen) for 10 -15 minutes per day with at least 40 percent of our bodies skin exposed is the general guide of what is required except if your skin is darker and you will need longer exposure. Reseacher’s have shown that by increasing levels of Vitamin D3 we can decrease many chronic diseases of nearly one million people in the world and cut the incidence of cancer by 40%. New recommendations for Vitamin D3 is 5000 i.u. per day. The best way to test for Vit D3 is via ablood test. We are testing our patients for Vitamin D3 and find that 3000 i.u. is the average dose people need in this area of the country.

The Wonderful World of Cold Laser Therapy

I just got back from a seminar in sunny Phoenix, Arizona with Dr. John Brimahall. Dr. John is retired from private practice but spends a lot of his time doing research with Cold Lasers and their applications with assisting the body with healing. He is now using low intensity lasers for brain integration. Here is a link to see our Bioflex Laser.

Even the Doctor needs Care

I had a bit of my own medicine in the Month of December. I was doing too much and wasn’t listening to my body. The end result was that my right hip seized up  and I was in extreme pain in my hip, down the outside of my thigh and in the heel of my foot. I now knew what my patient’s felt when they came in to my office in extreme pain. Any movement aggravated my condition, sleeping in most positions also aggravated the pain. I began to look for any therapy that would give me some relief. First I administered needle acupuncture which gave me about a ten percent reduction in my pain. I had never taken Advil before, so obviously I was desperate for relief and in need of sleep.

I had used a healer in the past that was able to identify any mental or emotional blocks that were effecting my mental health or physical health. The session with her revealed that I was not listening to my inner guidance and I was making choices that I was not aligned with. I needed to stop participating in events that I felt obligated to do. How many of you do things that you are doing because you think it is expected of you or you feel obligated. It was time for me to make some changes and be in alignment with my needs. This session helped take away the sharpness and the intensity of the pain. My next therapy modalities were cold laser and a three hour Body Logic Intensive with my friend Taylore Carre at Divine Balance Yoga. Finally I was back to a painfree state and fully functional again. I utilized all the therapies over a 5-6 day period to get me back in the saddle.

Anti-Aging, Vitamin C and the Brain

As our population is aging, fast food becoming mainstream, and a concern over eye and neurological health, we are seeing a demand for more natural therapies to counter our rising costs of healthcare. More information is coming out these days on the many benefits of Vitamin C. Research has indicated that Vitamin C is important for eye health and the prevention of cataracts. Now it is showing the anti-aging effect it has on the brain. According to the findings published in the Journal of Neuroscience, Vitamin C is needed for the correct functioning of retinal cells in the eyes. Because the retina is an important part of the central nervous system it is suggested that Vitamin C likely plays an important role in the brain that was not noticed before. The Semiahmoo Wellness Center in South Surrey has been using Vitamin C therapy since 1989.

Vitamin C and Anti-Aging

Vitamin C or L-ascorbate or L-ascorbic acid is an important water soluable vitamin. In the human body ascorbate acts as an anti-oxidant to protect the body from the effects of oxidative stress.  As an anti-oxidant Vitamin C ‘s job is to contribute electrons. We know that all infections do their damage via oxidative damage causing electron theft. All toxins cause all their damage by electron theft. Vitamin C contributes electrons so it gives something that will go in and prevent oxidative damage and contribute electrons to prevent tissue damage. Electron flow is the common denominator. The electron flow also relates to your life force. In his book “ Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, & Toxins” Dr. Thomas Levy compiles over 1200 scientific references on the many anti-aging and health benefits of this simple and very effective nutrient. Most naturopathic physicians are trained in the administration of Vitamin C both orally and intravenously.

Cold Laser Therapy- The New Kid on the Block

Yes the 21st century is upon us! We are definitely in the energy era. New energy technology is emerging every few months. The new kid on the block is Cold Laser Therapy, also known as Low Intensity Laser Therapy. We have been using this type of therapy in our office for the past two and a half years with some pretty stunning results. Cold Laser uses photon energy applied to your tissues and cells to create biochemical energy to speed up healing. The applications of cold laser has rapidly expanded due to work of Dr. Fred Kahn M.D. who sees 800 patients a week out of his Toronto clinic. He uses the Bioflex Laser made by Medi-Tech which uses both red and infra-red laser and is one of the leaders in laser therapy. www.bioflexlaser.com.

We just had a patient in last month with a painful tendonitis of the shoulder and after a week of treatments she was able to resume playing the following week.  I personally have fractured a rib playing summer ice hockey and should have been unable to work for 4-6 weeks. After daily laser treatments for a week I was able to resume work with some restrictions.

What I like about laser therapy is that it is quick at helping relieve pain, it is safe,it is drug free, and is on of the best modalities for treating soft tissue injuries. We have two cold lasers at our South Surrey clinic.

Anti-aging and Exercise

Skipping meals and low calorie diets are certainly not the answer to beating the obesity

epidemic. They in fact will cause depletion of muscle tissue, reduce your metabolic rate,

and lead to more deposition of body fat. A 2009 study showed that ver 12 weeks, by

increasing your resistance exercise (weight training) and adding the amino acid, L-arginine

to your diet, resulted in 6.6 pounds of fat loss and no loss of muscle. Compared to the

placebo group that lost 8.6 pounds ( 4.6 lbs. of fat and 3.7 lbs. of muscle). It is important to

not only get fat reduction , but to maintain muscle mass at the same time. As Naturopathic

Doctors at the Semiahmoo Wellness Center in White Rock/South Surrey we provide

programs to ensure you do not lose muscle mass.

More on Mercury Amalgams!

Research on Mercury Amalgams is getting more attention lately. In an article that was published in the November 15th issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, researchers have found that mercury is likely to be one of the multiple causes of Alzheimer’s disease. Mercury is one of the most toxic natural substances. It poses a danger to humans and may lead to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
The experimental research literature indicates that animal and cell models reproduce all the features of Alzheimer’s disease when mercury is given. For instance, one of the more widely known uses of mercury is in amalgam dental fillings, the most common type of fillings used by dentists.
Although more dentists are now using alternative materials for replacing fillings, many people are still walking around with mouths full of mercury. A qualified Naturopathic Doctor can assess you and make recommendations of the appropriate protocols for removal of this toxic substance.

Mercury Amalgam Fillings (This May Shock You!)

Mercury Vapour

Mercury Vapour From An Extracted Tooth

Bet you didn’t know just how much mercury your amalgam fillings leach.

I just posted an interesting demonstration video on my Chelation page (just scroll about halfway down the page), where an extracted tooth was placed in front of a light source that is blocked by mercury vapour.

The “black smoke” you can see in the video is actually mercury vapour!

Makes you think, doesn’t it?
